Hospitality Planners: Why we MUST Get Busy & Keep The Spirit of Celebrating Alive

Wow. What an unpredictable turn of events it has been. As someone who has been religious about bringing consistent content to my readers, I even needed a break last week to really settle into a new schedule. Our realities changed so drastically in a few short days and many of us are being pushed into positions we never saw ourselves in - working from home, homeschooling our children, working overtime or perhaps, like many hospitality workers, not working at all.

Closures due to COVID-19 have forced so many of our beloved restaurants and hospitality locations to close down, creating a mound of uncertainty for business owners, managers, event planners, service workers and all those whose companies service hospitality in some way. Something I’ve learned in these last few weeks is that when there is some type of crisis, I crave a way to keep busy or make myself useful. If you’re a hospitality professional, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I bet almost everyone who isn't working now is wondering why they’re having a hard time adjusting to a slower lifestyle. It’s because we’re all built to get our hands dirty, to have purpose, to help. Like many of you, I’ve tried to scratch that itch by donating to the hospitality community in any way I can, or just by reaching out to those that I know who are hurting. Yet, I still found myself feeling like I wasn’t doing enough. I knew I could blog, but I felt uninspired. I felt like what I was doing wasn’t going to help anyone right now. I took some time to reflect and even talked to some who follow SSC to see what it was that they needed.

Much of what I heard was the same. People just want to get back to work. They want to be inspired again. They want to know that the need for events will eventually come back. While I don’t have a crystal ball that can tell us exactly what will happen, I can tell you this: in my gut, I feel as though the quarantine has become a reset for planners. A chance for us to stop, take a step back and reflect. An opportunity for us to be inspired again. There is no doubt that some locations may shutter and some may make it through the quarantine. That won’t kill the spirit of hospitality though. It also won’t kill the desire we have as humans to celebrate life. After the virus subsides (however long that may be), there will still be births, weddings, showers, promotions, anniversaries, girls trips, non-for-profit events, the list goes on! The virus cannot stop life and the many reasons we humans celebrate.

That is where WE come in, event planners! We’re the ones people look to for those special life moments. Now that life has taken a weird turn, it’s even more important that we slap that planner hat on and keep the celebration of life moving. We need to give hope in whatever way that works for our clients, our colleagues and ourselves.

I’ve decided to help by doing everything I can to put the ‘celebrate’ in She Said Celebrate for you all. My promise to all of you is that I will continue sharing content every Tuesday about events, planning, entertaining and how you can still engage with your clients. As an industry, we must continue to inspire celebrating and become prepared for when we’re in the weeds again (how did we get to the point where we miss that!?). Something tells me that the world is going to need us more than ever after the dust settles. Planners are here to help people celebrate, and that is exactly what I plan to help you do. Who is with me?
